I found this a very liberating passage. So often we can be unduly influenced by what others think or say about us or have other people's expectations put upon us. Outwardly this may cause us to appear wise and seem like we're rigorously devoted, delighting in self humiliation and the disciplining of our bodies. Truth is - the outward signs hold no value in checking the state of our hearts or the indulgence of the flesh - in fact - in doing those 'outward' things we can end up playing to the flesh! Whoa!
